Oral Surgery

Learn More About Oral Surgery

is mostly about taking out teeth that are too decayed to be fixed, or are broken, or have loosened up because of gum disease. We do not “pull teeth”; I kind of prefer saying “remove teeth”, or “extract teeth”, because it does not sound as bad as “pulling”. Often, when we “remove a tooth”, I prefer to replace the missing root with a bone graft right at the time of the procedure. It helps with the healing, and with replacing the tooth in a few months with an implant. And, importantly, it’s really a breeze to do, because the grafting material comes in a little package in a form of a little plug or bone powder.

Periodontics

is super-important. Periodontium is the foundation of our teeth, and without the solid, healthy foundation, problems will always occur. Periodontics ties in together prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. Your Dental Hygienist is going to take x-rays of your teeth and surrounding bone, take photographs, measure how deep we can probe under the gums to ascertain how healthy your teeth really are. If you think the Hygienist’s job is easy, think again!

Prosthodontics

largely involves dealing with replacing missing teeth with either removable appliances, like various types of dentures, and/or with fixed restorations, which stay in the mouth 24/7, like crowns and bridges, which are cemented onto your natural teeth, or dental implants. So, these days prosthodontics is closely related to IMPLANTHOLOGY.

Orthodontics

is correcting malpositioned teeth to make them straight and nice with either braces or other types of appliances, like Invisalign. We don’t perform this treatment here and will refer you or your child to an orthodontist. Let them deal with it!

Implantology

is part of our profession that has to do with replacing missing teeth with, you guessed it, dental implants. These implants sort of look like screws which we place inside the jawbone, in place of the roots of teeth that you’ve lost. This implant is made from titanium, the same metal as artificial knees and hips. The implant is basically a new root for your tooth; we place a crown on it, and it becomes your new tooth, or we can attach implants to a denture, if you are missing a few teeth, and it becomes much more comfortable to eat your dinner.

Pediatric Dentistry

is a comprehensive way of dealing with kids’ dental needs. We do see many children, but we always look for the best for your kiddo, so we may refer you to have them see a pediatric dentist, if the need arises. With the near-universal water fluoridation, cavities have become much less of an issue, however, with the proliferation of carbonated drinks, i.e. sodas, and mega-sweet “energy drinks’, we do see a lot of decayed teeth in teenagers.

Oral Pathology

may mean that there is something in your mouth or on your lips that should not be there. That’s why when we look inside your mouth, we are paying attention not just to the teeth, but to what’s going on with your cheeks, lips, palate, and tongue. When I ask you to stick your tongue out, and grab it with the gauze, it’s not because I can, but because we are examining it for oral pathology. If we see something that we aren’t sure about, we refer you for a biopsy, when a piece of the tissue is removed and examined to find out what it is. This is a particularly important part of what we do here.

Endodontics

is also known as root canals. Yes, we know that you have been conditioned to be gravely scared of those, but it really isn’t that bad…unless you wait too long to fix a broken or decayed tooth. That’s why we don’t want you to wait too long! Because if you do, your tooth may become infected, and start to hurt. That is why we don’t recommend “just waiting it out” …it’s a bad idea! When we “do root canals” we remove tiny nerves, tiny blood vessels and other tiny stuff known as pulp, from inside of the roots of the teeth. After the root canal is finished, we usually crown the tooth as soon as possible!.
